Motivational Interviewing

“Motivational Interviewing is centered on the position that behavior change is only possible when the client feels personally accepted and valued.” — David Markland

Working with Cindy

I am a Motivational Interviewing Network of Trainers (MINT) trainer and clinician. I have experience as a primary trainer for introductory and advanced trainings in MI.

My specialization is in behavior change especially behavioral medicine and substance use.

My approach to training and consultation is similar to my approach with my therapy clients: collaborative, curious, and empowering. I am passionate about Motivational Interviewing and its practice. I love helping someone discover the power of Motivational Interviewing and how to apply those core values of collaboration, evocation, autonomy and compassion to their practice.

Using structured training, feedback and collaboration, together we will work towards establishing and honing MI skills. This includes didactics and engaging exercises along withreviewing and practicing MI skills while defining how you want to utilize MI in ongoing work.

You’ll come away with powerful tools to increase the effectiveness of therapeutic work, increased confidence in skill, and re-energized about the possibility for helping clients change.

  3. Effective for Behavior Change: MI has been shown to be effective for a range of behavior changes, from substance abuse to health behaviors like diet and exercise.

  4. Supports Client Autonomy: MI emphasizes the importance of client autonomy and choice in the change process, which can lead to more sustainable changes.

  5. Versatility: MI can be integrated into various therapeutic approaches and is applicable across different populations and settings.

  6. Professional Development: Learning MI can be a valuable addition to a professional's skill set, enhancing their effectiveness and job satisfaction.

Overall, MI training can empower professionals to facilitate positive change in their clients' lives and improve outcomes in a wide range of professional settings.

Consultation

Research on ongoing professional consultation in Motivational Interviewing (MI) consistently demonstrates its positive impact on practitioner skill development and client outcomes. Studies have shown that regular consultation leads to improvements in practitioner proficiency, adherence to MI principles, and overall treatment effectiveness.

MI consultation has consistently shown greater improvement in MI skills and client outcomes compared to workshop training alone. Ongoing consultation helps therapists maintain their MI skills over time, leading to better treatment outcomes for clients. Professional consultation is a valuable component of MI training and implementation, leading to improved confidence, competence and client outcomes.

Rates

MI consultation typically includes coding of 6-8 twenty minute session recordings utilizing the Motivational Interviewing Treatment Integrity Scale (MITI)* along with structured consulation sessions to review progress, provide feedback, and assess skill.
